Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola Jr in 1928 in Pittsburgh. He began as a commercial illustrator but went on to explore the relationship between art, advertising and celebrity culture. In 1962, he completed 32 paintings of Campbells Soup Cans using serial repetition celebrating commodity culture and the Marilyn Diptych which were exhibited in New York. Although he would go on to have a profound influence on later pop artists, these works were pre-dated in the UK by Peter Blake and the 1959 intake of RCA students (including David Hockney) amongst others.
